Rehabilitative Exercise: Keeping the Pain Away

E-mail

Rehabilitative exercise is necessary both during and afteryour spinal treatments to make sure the correction you achieve is a lasting one. Most chiropractors you've visited likely just focused on pain relief and spinaladjustment, essentially short-term fixes that ensure you'll soon be backseeking more treatment.

At Esprit Wellness, our goal for you is a more permanentstructural correction followed up by rehabilitative exercise to maintain your spine'shealth. This is where spinal rehab comes in.

Our rehab exercises are done both in clinic and at home. Theyinvolve the application of heat, cold, massage and exercise. Dr. Sid willprescribe exactly the right balance of these treatments to strengthen, relaxand heal your muscles.

Spinal RehabTherapies

Heat Therapy:  Dr. Sid wraps moist hot packs in layersof towels and places them on the treatment area. The benefits of heat include:

  • Relaxation of tight muscles and tissues,
  • Decreased pain,
  • Increased blood circulation to the affected area.

Patients with muscle strains, spasms, or arthritis oftenbenefit from treatment with moist hot packs.

Cold Therapy: Coldgel packs are used by Dr. Sid to treat areas of pain and inflammation. The coldpacks are wrapped in wet towels and applied directly to the treatment area ofthe patient's body.

Cold therapy decreases inflammation, pain, and swelling.Patients with acute injuries often benefit from cold therapy.

Exercise: Dr. Sidwill demonstrate and prescribe specific therapeutic exercises to support yourongoing treatment and recovery. Therapeutic exercises are often done in theoffice under Dr. Sid's supervision. He may use therapeutic machines andequipment that provide vibration and body weighting to speed up posturalcorrection. The doctor will also give you an exercise plan to follow at home, anecessary part of your healing.

Important Message to Patients:

Rehabilitative Exercise

It's important to remember that spinal misalignments can takeyears to develop, and so it takes time to correct them. Once your pain hassubsided, you may think all is well and abandon your efforts, returning to yourold habits.

But if you end your care before fully healing the musclesand soft tissues, you invite a relapse. Many people make this mistake and endup coming back again and again for further chiropractic treatments, notrealizing that ongoing rehabilitative exercise can prevent the pain fromreturning.

When you come to Esprit Wellness, we'll carefully explainthe right way to do your rehabilitative "homework" and we'll help you stay ontrack.
