Back pain is always a bad experience, but especially when you’re having a busy day. Once you start working for several hours at your desk or spend time cleaning your house, in an instant, you can begin to feel that agonizing pain on your lower back. If it becomes bad enough, you may end up having to stop what you’re doing and spend your precious time tending to your back pain instead of getting things on your to-do list done.

Whether you are at home or at work, back pain can force you to focus on your body rather than what you need to do. Bending down, standing, or even sitting in a chair can be difficult when you’re experiencing discomfort in your back. And, what makes it worse is that some back pain can last for several hours, essentially rendering you ineffective.

At the onset of back pain, the first thing that you should do is give your body a break. Yes, you may have a lot of things to do, but given you probably won’t be able to focus on your work due to the pain anyway, it’s better to take a break and see if the pain will go away, so you can return to productivity. Back pain is one way your body tells you that it needs rest for a while or a shift in movement because it is experiencing too much stress. Usually, the best thing to do is to lie down straight on your back for a few minutes, so it can relax and alleviate the tension.

Another immediate relief for back pain is applying ice. If you feel inflammation in your lower back, then reduce the swelling by applying an ice pack on your back. Typically, ice is applied after a back injury or a strain. The recommended amount of time for using ice is about fifteen minutes.

Giving your back a quick massage is another way to find immediate relief. Massage releases the tension in our body, which will help your back relax.  If you are at home, have a loved one massage your back instead.

After finding instant relief for your back pain, schedule a visit to your chiropractor as soon as possible, so you can address the cause of your back pain and treat it to reduce the chances of it worsening. NY Chiropractic provides excellent recommendations on how you can find temporary relief whenever you feel pain in your back and also provides effective treatments for long-term relief for back pain.
