Children with scoliosis are often unable to enjoy their childhood the way other children do, given their physical deformity. The abnormal curvature in their spine limits their participation in physical activities and can cause emotional stress and social difficulties. Scoliosis has become more common among children, and many parents worry if their kids are also prone to scoliosis or other spinal deformities.

Preventing scoliosis depends mostly on living a healthy lifestyle and avoiding injuries to the body. You must make sure that your children eat healthy meals every day and receive sufficient levels of calcium to help keep their bones healthy and strong. However, keep in mind that scoliosis can still be triggered despite a healthy lifestyle. Idiopathic scoliosis, for example, is a genetic form of scoliosis that manifests in children.  If you have a family member with a history of scoliosis, there is a higher risk that your child might develop scoliosis too.

Normally, scoliosis is due to an injury or bad posture. A severe injury can often trigger the manifestation of scoliosis. So can carrying a heavy load on your back or enduring constant strain on the spine or lower back.  If you suspect that scoliosis may be forming, you need to meet with a doctor and have it checked immediately.  The longer you wait to diagnose scoliosis and begin treatment, the more difficult it becomes to cure it.

Although the definitive causes of scoliosis are still quite unknown, paying closer attention to your kids and monitoring their growth and lifestyle can help to reduce the possible causes of scoliosis.  For example, check to see if your child’s backpack is too heavy and find solutions for dispersing the load to reduce the weight that is placed on their shoulders and back. It is also important to monitor their posture and keep an eye out for signs like uneven shoulders or leaning on one side.

NY Chiropractic recommends that any possible signs of scoliosis should be checked immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment. That will ensure that the spinal condition is addressed as early as possible in order to reduce the chances of it worsening.
