Is physical therapy for chronic pain effective?

According to a research study conducted by the Ottawa Panel it is Research indicates that massage therapy is in fact effective in reducing back pain as well as improving functionality. More positive recommendations on relevant articles on massage therapy and back pain suggest an effective result.

The Ottawa Panel researched literature and articles on massage therapy and lower back pain dating from January 1, 1948 to December 31, 2010.  To document the effectiveness of using massage therapy, they applied certain criteria to the research, concentrating on the participants, interventions, controls, outcomes, and methodological quality with grades assigned to each depending on the strength of each factor.

Out of the articles, 100 recommendations were noted, including 37 positive recommendations and 63 neutral recommendations on the effectiveness of massage therapy for lowering back pain. This indicated that massage therapy can indeed assist in treating lower back, acute, sub-acute, and  chronic back pain.  The research also noted that massage treatments can help in reducing the chances of further disability after treatment. Short term relief is also achieved when exercise or massage treatment is backed up with proper knowledge on pain relief.
